Overview: What Is Generative AI

Numerous definitions of generative AI (artificial intelligence) abound in both popular and scientific literature.

  • "Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various types of content, including text, imagery, audio and synthetic data." (from TechTarget)
  • "Generative AI refers to deep-learning models that can generate high-quality text, images, and other content based on the data they were trained on." (from IBM Research Blog)
  • "Generative AI is the branch of AI that enables machines to learn patterns from vast datasets and then to autonomously produce new content based on those patterns." (from IEEE Spectrum)

Content is created from a "conversation" with the searcher or user and refined through user responses and additional input. Generative AI tools create new content based on what they learn from their data sets.
