Evaluating Information: Algorithms

Evaluating Information is an online toolkit for students and instructors promoting the key information skills for democratic citizenship. The guide features videos, articles, handouts and other resources.

Algo What?

Algorithms are complex computational formulas and models that predict our responses or engagement with content in an attempt to personalize the experience and retain our attention. Digital platforms, such as Internet browsers and social media, customize ads and search results based on prior engagements with the platform and the personal information provided, such as a personal profile. Each time we use a digital platform, it gathers more data to further refine and tailor what we see.

On one side it's very useful in helping weed through the thousands of pieces of information we see and hear, and delivering content or options we are most likely to want or need. However, the other side leaves us vulnerable to manipulation and misdirection.

Try This

Do you know how much information Google has gathered about you? Try the following activity:

  1. Log in to your Google account on your phone or laptop.
  2. Click the Data & Personalization tab.
  3. Scroll down to Ad Personalization and click the link to “Go to ad settings.”
  4. Under “How your ads are personalized,” scroll through the personal information Google has collected about you including your presumed age and gender, shopping habits, and interests.

Interacting with Algorithms

  1. Understand what algorithms are.
  2. Know where algorithms are deployed - now and in the future.
  3. Understand the intent and goals of those owning or deploying the algorithm.
  4. Take control of your data and privacy.
  5. Avoid dependency.
