Every year, June is known as Pride Month in the United States. This month long celebration is in honor of the Stonewall Riots, which occurred in Manhattan, New York in 1969. These riots eventually became the gateway to the Gay Rights Movement in the US during the 1970s. In this guide, you will find resources and books located in the Full Sail Library, along with background history on important people and events within the Gay Rights Movement, for those interested in researching both the Movement and Pride Month, as well as other LGBTQIA+ resources.
Pride Month became an official celebration on June 11, 1999, when President Clinton issued Proclamation No. 7203 for what was known back then as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.
Ten years later on June 1st, 2009, President Obama issued an updated Proclamation - No. 8387 for what is now known as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Month. The proclamation made reference to the many contributions LGBT Americans made in both “promoting equal rights to all regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and in broader initiatives such as the response to the global HIV pandemic.” It has been an important month to commemorate ever since.
