Sports Marketing & Media: Statistics

Resources and strategies for sports marketing and media.

Tips for Finding Statistical Resources

Start with what, where and when. Knowing the answers to these three questions will guide your search for statistical information.

Let's start with the broad question: "I need sports statistics." By turning this into a more specific question, you will locate more appropriate information.

Ask yourself the following:

  • What do I need statistics about? For example, if you're looking for education statistics be specific about what you need.
    • What could be student athletes, coaches, universities/colleges, etc.
    • What could also be a specific sport.
  • Where do I need statistics for?
    • Geography is a key component in the collection and reporting of data.
    • The where could be global (international), national (country-level or federal), state or province, county, city, etc.
  • When, what time period, do I need statistics for?
    • Do you need data for a single year (i.e., 2017), multiple years (i.e., 2010-2017); or,
    • Do you need data for a specific time interval (hourly, daily, monthly, annually, etc.)

A more specific question might be: "I need data about the percentage of student athletes (what) in the U.S. (where) who graduated from college between 2010 and 2015 (when) and entered professional sports."

With a well formulated and specific question, your next step will be to think about who might collect and publish the data. Who (what agency, organization, etc.) is likely to have an interest in this specific topic?
